WE ARE ART.

When I was younger, I used to think art meant a painting or some sort of drawing. So when people asked if I was an artist or if I was artistic at all, I would say “no, I can’t draw if my life depended on it.” But as I got older and became more familiar with my surroundings and the world, I realised that art does not fall under just one category. Art could be anything – a piece of writing, a song, a photo, or even ourselves.

This painting created by David Choe depicts the definition of art perfectly. At first glance, the painting is literally just a creation of colours mashed together around an image of a face. However, if you look closely, the colours that pop out create an image of an individual playing the electric guitar. The intensity of the facial expression reflects the passion that this person has for their art. The mixture of colour surrounding the person’s body is purely speaking the words “we are art”, and along with the splatter of colour and the spiralling effect around the head area, this artwork shows the creativity flowing out and being shared with the rest of the world.

This image can definitely be interpreted in various ways. The image of the individual is slowly being faded out by the splatters of colour and can reflect the action of someone losing themselves in their talents. Furthermore, the different colours used can be a representation of the different kinds of people all over the world – people of different race, culture, or sexuality. In the end, no matter how the painting is depicted, it shows that despite who you are and where you come from, everyone is art – unique and different. Two people looking at the same artwork will have different interpretations of what it means and what it stands for – but that’s the beauty of it.

I believe that the world should be viewed like a piece of artwork – with an open mind and an open heart. Art is really a powerful expression of human nature. It is important that we take a step back, and see things from another perspective, rather than looking at the smaller picture from the same spot over and over again.
